One of the many pleasures this season has been the rise and rise of St Johnstone. They’re one of those clubs that never quite hits the headlines unless one of their players is caught in a Perth nightclub (or ‘niteclub’ as they spell it in Tayside) with something stronger to clear the nasal cavities than a Vick’s inhaler. Or for signing Derek Riordan in a move that can only described as the Tellytubbies swapping loveable Po for Mike Tyson. [EDITOR’S NOTE: Though obviously we’re not suggesting Derek Riordan having involvement in any Tyson-esque criminality. And in a sporting sense, pretty sure Tyson moved a lot more than Riordan…]

St Johnstone go about their business, year after year, producing good managers and players without troubling the local bank manager for as much as a £100 overdraft to buy their famous tea lady, Aggie, a new kettle warmer.

Maybe it’s their background. St Johnstone must be the only club to say they formed in one year – 1884 – even though they have conclusive evidence they didn’t actually play a game until 1885. Why have they not changed it? As their official history says:

Steve Maskrey. Saints legend and the only footballer we can think of to have been nicknamed ‘Zorro’.
“Given the clear indication that the St Johnstone Cricket Club members played football prior to the official formation of the club, 1884 continues to be shown as the year of formation on the club crest and on merchandising.”

To which I say – the Mayans played football before you were formed, does that mean you can show your origin as 2000BC?!

With St Johnstone sitting third in the league it is however time to celebrate their achievements in the only way Jukebox Durie knows how – a photo montage and one of the best tunes from 1979 by Scottish punk band ‘The Skids’. [Editor’s note: Interesting choice of band for a Saintees vid, given that most of The Skids hailed from Dunfermline and the Pars run out to their hit ‘Into The Valley’. We take it there wasn’t a Perth punk scene? Barbour jackets with safety pins through them…?]

About the Author
After too many years as season ticket holder at Parkhead, Andy Todd renounced the SPL three years ago to support Queens Park. One team is a rank bunch of amateurs who play in a state of the art stadium and the other is…(I think we can all see where this is going).

Andy has been performing comedy for 18 months but is currently ‘between gigs’ while he writes a book on Scottish property law to be published in Summer 2012. Its potential audience will be less than 300 but his mum will be very proud.
