Jukebox Durie is our weekly review of the best (and the worst) Scottish football songs. This week… ‘Jinky’ Johnstone and Simple Minds.

It’s ironic that 80’s rock band Simple Minds are best known for the song “Don’t You Forget About Me” as the song was a cover, and it was written by another band who no one remembers. Don’t You Forget About Me indeed.

In 2003, Simple Minds recorded the Pogues classic song “Dirty Ol’Town” a tribute to Celtic Football legend Jimmy Johnstone, who was battling Motor Neurone Disease. The song appeared on the soundtrack of a film about his life, Lord Of The Wing.

Famously, lead singer Jim Kerr changed the lyrics of the song so that instead of singing “Saw a train set the night on fire” he sang “Saw Jimmy Johnstone set the night on fire.” So, that’s what happened in the infamous Largs boating incident…

Editor’s Note: In an aside that may or may not be interesting, while writing on the BBC1 Scotland show Craig Hill’s Out Tonight, I was once removed from the green room by an over-zealous member of the production team. I was sitting on a couch (with another one opposite me empty) when I was asked to shift, “In case Jim Kerr from Simple Minds wants a comfy seat”. Don’t let anybody tell you that writing for TV shows is glamourous. Teddy

About the Author
After too many years as season ticket holder at Parkhead, Andy Todd renounced the SPL three years ago to support Queens Park. One team is a rank bunch of amateurs who play in a state of the art stadium and the other is…(I think we can all see where this is going).

Andy has been performing comedy for 18 months but is currently ‘between gigs’ while he writes a book on Scottish property law to be published in Summer 2012. Its potential audience will be less than 300 but his mum will be very proud.
