What is the connection between Robocop and Celtic’s Paddy McCourt?

Is it:

A. They get more and more crap the more you see them (Robocop 3, I’m looking especially at you, but Paddy don’t think I’m not considering substituting you on 70 minutes)?

B. They’ve got an injury list as long as a broken arm?

C. Tony Britten.

The correct answer is C. Tony Britten has worked across a variety of genres, creating music for film, TV, commercials and opera. He was the composer on Robocop (connection 1!) and, in 1992, he made his name when he was asked by UEFA to create an anthem for the Champion’s League. He adapted Handel’s Zadok the Priest for the role. In 2010 the anthem was played more than 7 million times in more than 22 countries – and this year, it will be played at Celtic Park after Celtic qualified for the Champions League (connection 2!).

The anthem is EPIC, but like all anthems it relies far too much on a a large orchestra, a huge choir and a spare kitchen sink to build excitement and power. For an anthem to succeed it must still work even when shrunk down to the bare essentials. You can still play God Save The Queen using just a comb, spoons and a Chelsea pensioner. Can you same thing about the Champions League anthem? Does it work when you keep things simple? You can judge for yourself as this is the rock version of the anthem with just bass drum and guitar.
