I’m going to try to avoid mentioning Rangers too much this week. Partly because it’ll be hard to finish this article if I open a vein halfway through it (I’m not sure of the Genius Bar’s policy on fixing blood-damaged Macs) and partly because so many of you are simply weary of hearing about the story that’s dominated the Scottish news for the past couple of weeks.

Spare a thought though for Walter Smith. He spent the Everton job muddling through while players like Duncan Ferguson were sold from under him, then lifted a confidence-battered Scotland side 70 places in the Fifa rankings, took over at Rangers and won three league titles despite going around two years without signing a player. He turned 64 today. Was his reward for his efforts somebody offering him the chance to take over a minted team with a realistic chance of challenging for success? No, he was offered a short-term deal with the task of keeping Mick McCarthy’s Wolves side up. A task that the Wolves board didn’t even trust Mick McCarthy himself with. Understandably, he turned it down. It would be great to see him back in management soon though, hopefully somewhere within easy reach of a decent golf course. Let’s give the man a chance to enjoy what would probably be his final job! You know Craig Brown clings onto the Aberdeen job because he’s so determined to wait for Trump to open that golf course.

McCarthy’s assistant, Terry Connor, will now be in charge until the end of the season. He’ll be hoping to ride the morale boost of being appointed via a club statement of “Well no other f*cker wants it.”

Carlos Tevez is back in Manchester, having issued an ‘unreserved apology’. I suppose he doesn’t really do reservations anyway, not when he can never be trusted to turn up for them. Across Manchester there may be another player/manager bust-up looming after Sir Alex called Tom Cleverley – “a very clever footballer”. A more backhanded compliment I’ve yet to hear.

Ross McCormack has hit out at Craig Levein after again being overlooked for a place in the Scotland squad. McCormack isn’t sure what more he has to do to earn a call-up. Neither am I, but I reckon it wouldn’t do him any harm to burn an effigy of Steven Fletcher, film it, and send Levein the youtube link.

AVB continued down the PLG path of football management by attempting to win a war of wills with the dressing room, dropping the most influential figures, and then having to contemplate the thought that in a bust-up between the two sides…maybe they’re both wrong. Ashley Cole being out of form doesn’t make Bosingwa any better. Appealing for Abramovich’s public backing feels increasingly bunny-boiling. It’s becoming too easy to imagine two years from now Mourinho holding aloft the Premier League trophy as Chelsea manager, while AVB’s broken into his house and is cutting the eyes out of any photos of Jose and Abramovich together.

Right. It’s a short (and belated) column this week as yesterday I was editing the latest Scottish Comedy FC Podcast. Episode 5 features myself, Gordon Alexander (@goalexander), Richard Hunter, and Gareth Waugh (@garethwaugh).

About the Author

Twice runner-up in Scottish Comedian of the Year finals, Teddy was named ‘Best Up and Coming Comedian’ at the Scottish Variety Awards in 2010. He’s written for two BBC Radio 5 ‘Unsporting Reviews of the Year’, and has also worked as both writer and script editor on the BBC1 Scotland football shows ‘Offside’ & ‘Only An Excuse?’. He’s been a Rangers season-ticket holder for the past 17 years, but he’s all about the football not “all that other shite”. Also has a fondness for Dynamo Kyiv that can be traced back to an unhealthy obsession with Alexei Mikhailitchenko (or Oleksiy Mykhalychenko if you prefer to transliterate from the Ukrainian rather than the Russian. That’s the unhealthy obsession we’re talking about.)

“brilliant Scottish comic” Kate Copstick, Scotland on Sunday

“Head, shoulders, knees and toes above the rest…mighty stage presence and impressively high punchline ratio” Brian Donaldson, Scotsman

“freshly minted topical gags…pin-sharp lines…great routine…a class act” Steve Bennett, Chortle.co.uk

“has flourished…cracking lines” Jay Richardson, Scotsman

“there are few of his Scottish-based contemporaries that can spin the same high standard of punchlines” Brian Donaldson, Scotland on Sunday
