montrose-header

We’ve invited fans of the 42 SPFL clubs (well, some of them at least) to give us a preview of their team’s upcoming season. Let’s find out what Mof Gimmers thinks is in store for Montrose…

Last Season’s Position (League 2) – Rock bottom

This Season’s Prediction – 9th

Best Signing of the Summer So Far – A. Trialist

Signing players at Montrose is not like other clubs, where we look for the cream of Scottish football, looking for someone with a cultured left foot. It just doesn’t work like that at Montrose, sadly. After losing a lot of popular players to the Highland League, we’ll have to wait and see if we can get the much fancied A. Trialist on board. In fact, we could do with all the Trialist siblings too.

Key Man – Ross Campbell

Campbell scored half a dozen goals toward the end of the season and hopefully, will kick on from there on the glorious plastic grass of Links Park.

Declan Milne is one to keep an eye on as well, providing he gets a decent run-out.

You suspect that the key man in the forthcoming season will be the manager. He’s the one who has to make silk from a sow’s ear.

The Manager – Paul Hegarty

Hegarty is a Dundee United legend, and no mistake. And his right hand man, John Holt, we all know is a reggae superstar. Between the two, we can only hope for a bit of stability and that they’ll be able to whip the team into shape. They’ve a difficult job of getting a load of players into the threadbare Montrose squad, but among the fans, his appointment was a mixture of hope and relief.

Expectations

The word that best describes Montrose’s league performance, generally, is ‘languishing’. Of course, there have been moments where The Gable Endies have reached the top half of the table, but there’s a real snakes-and-ladders feel about the club’s recent history.

Last season has been described as an ‘omnishambles’ by one fan, and that’s about right. If we have a squad that is willing to be competitive, or even combative, that’ll do. Montrose need to turn tight matches into points, rather than losses. Staying in the league through the play-offs was fun, but can our nerves handle it?

One thing about being a Montrose fan, is you learn that expectations are for the weak.
