Thanks to the British Movietone Archive, you can now watch a load of incredible old news clips including this footage (unfortunately without sound) of the 1971 Scottish Cup Final Replay between Rangers and Celtic.

The clip doesn’t give you much of an idea of how the game developed since it is cut together from raw footage but you do get some fantastic glimpses of how football used to be; Old Hampden, packed to the rafters with 120,000 people, the referee ‘Tiny’ Wharton (and his 6′ 4″ frame) and someone offering a two-fingered salute to the pitch in front of the news camera at one point (some things never change).

Goals from Celtic’s Bobby Lennox and Rangers’ Derek Johnstone meant that the final ended in a draw and went to a replay, with Celtic running out eventual 2-1 winners four days later.

This video is available thanks to the archive work of Associated Press’ British Movietone Archive which has recently been uploaded to Youtube. There are more incredible videos on there, some dating back as far as 1895.
