Jukebox Durie is our weekly review of the best (and the worst) Scottish football songs.

Britpop was responsible for more crimes against humanity than the entire world conquering efforts of the Injustice League (including but not limited to Robo-Armageddon, Monkey Apocalyse, and numerous attempted uses of a Devastating Doomsday Device). We had Country House by Blur. We had a band called Menswear who were only famous because there lead singer wore a red Prussian military jacket. That’s how bad Britpop was – a band called Menswear became The Next Big Thing and they didn’t even wear menswear?!

But the biggest villains of all, Britpop’s Lex Luthor was not one of Oasis, Blur or Pulp; or not even a culprit from the lesser lights of The Bluetones, Echobelly or *shudder* Sleeper; it was none other than Scottish band The Supernaturals.

The Supernaturals were a prolific band. They wrote more than 100 songs in 5 years. But, remember being prolific is not a good thing – diarrhoea is just prolific pooing. In 1998 however they wrote the one song that meant they would never need to work again. That song was “Smile”. Google it. It’s infectious, I’ll give you that, but, then again, so is diarrhoea.

To me, this sounds like a thousand screeching chalkboards cutting through my soul. It’s the calculate sound of a man wiping his dick on your ear even though he has a towel in his hands. It is utterly and truly ghastly. And I will not post a link to it here.

But I forgave them everything after Gary Black (@itsgaryblack) sent me the link to this:

This is High Tension at Boghead a a B-side to their 1997 single Prepare To Land. It is an Arab Strapesque tale of life and memories in the 3rd division at Dumbarton’s historic home, before that old home was sold for re-development as brand new homes. Enjoy!

(PS there were rumours that The Supernaturals recorded a follow up single called Sexual Tension At Dens Park. It was about whether a fan in a dark blue parka was in fact a man or a woman – in Dundee you can never be sure!)

About the Author
After too many years as season ticket holder at Parkhead, Andy Todd renounced the SPL three years ago to support Queens Park. One team is a rank bunch of amateurs who play in a state of the art stadium and the other is…(I think we can all see where this is going).

Andy has been performing comedy for 18 months but is currently ‘between gigs’ while he writes a book on Scottish property law to be published in Summer 2012. Its potential audience will be less than 300 but his mum will be very proud.
