St-Mirren-Header

We’ve invited fans of the 42 SPFL clubs (well, some of them at least) to give us a preview of their team’s upcoming season. Let’s find out what Kenny Morrison thinks is in store for St. Mirren…

Last Season’s Position – 12th (SPFL Premiership)

This Season’s Prediction – 3rd

Best Signing of the Summer So Far – Scott Agnew

For me, Scott Agnew just about pips Stuart Carswell to this. He has played under Murray at Dumbarton and that could see him being important simply because other players can go to him for tips on what is expected. Added to that is the fact he’s already proven he can score at this level, with 35 league goals for Dumbarton and a recent 13 goal season. We were short of goals last season and Agnew alongside Stevie Mallan could give us that threat from midfield.

Key Man – Steven Thompson

I was torn on this one, but I will go with Steven Thompson. Last season couldn’t have been more disappointing for Steven and this season could be, one of his words, cathartic. In the dressing room and on the park he is a leader who commands respect, but he has looked isolated in the past. He’ll need support week in an week out, if he gets it then I’ve no doubt he can give us the same contribution as Mark Yardley did under Tom Hendrie.

The Manager – Ian Murray

Ian Murray was appointed in May 2015 as a replacement for Gary Teale. The 34 year old, former Scottish International, had previously been the manager of Dumbarton for two and a half seasons. In that time, Dumbarton finished clear of relegation twice and season 13/14 saw them finish just short of the play off places. That record is fairly impressive for a part time side, so I’d argue he should do more with better resources. Initial interviews have pointed to him not being someone to cross, whilst he may even have a plan B.

Expectations

Following Danny Lennon’s departure, season 14/15 started with Saints fans wondering why. Tommy Craig and a poorly assembled squad, one sacking, two hirings, two failed takeover attempts, the best player leaving and some poor signings later the mess of a season ended with relegation. As Saints fans scan fixtures and dream, they’ll all hope for better on and off the park during this coming season.

It’s certainly hoped that a new young manager, a youthful nucleus in the squad and a clear out will benefit the club and see the 2,500+ season ticket holders able to enjoy their football again. Early signings have pointed to better than last year with Agnew and Carswell both having a decent pedigree, whilst Conlan and Howieson have both been capped at various levels. McMullan, on loan from Celtic, also looks an exciting prospect. Adding them to the younger players and the likes of Ridgers, Thomson and Gow gives an expectation of a play-off finish. The hope is that we can add an experienced defender, a keeper and pace up top prior to the Ibrox trip. Away from the league, a Cup run or two and movement on the club sale are all hoped for.

About The Author

I’ve been a Saints fan since birth, my first lottery ticket was the old Saints one and I’ve previously done some journalist work for the club. This season is my third promotion campaign that I remember and I’m genuinely looking forward to it.  My twitter handle is @TsuMirren if anyone fancies giving me feedback, some 15/16 banter or just following me for occasional rants and gossip.
